Nursing Resources: CINAHL (Nursing)

What you need to know about CINAHL

CINAHL (Sin-all) provides indexing of the top nursing and allied health literature available including nursing journals and publications from the National League for Nursing and the American Nurses Association. Literature covers a wide range of topics including nursing, biomedicine, health sciences librarianship, alternative/complementary medicine, consumer health and 17 allied health disciplines.

In addition, CINAHL provides access to health care books, nursing dissertations, selected conference proceedings, standards of practice, audiovisuals and book chapters. It includes full-text journals, legal cases, clinical innovations, critical paths, research instruments and clinical trials.

Creating A "My Folder" Account

When working in any of the EbscoHost databases (CINAHL, SocIndex, Academic Search, etc.) creating your own personal account, or "My Folder", is essential to organize articles into specific folders, save searches, create alerts, share subfolders. You will be able to access this feature anywhere you can access any EbscoHost database, on or off campus.

Using the CINAHL/MeSH Headings

Don't forget to also select the keyword at the bottom of the list of CINAHL Headings for your search. Including keywords along with the CINAHL Headings will broaden your search, providing more results.

Advanced Searching in CINAHL

CINAHL Headings are like the Medical Subject Headings in PubMed--increasing the specificity of results. However, nursing language can change frequently so you may have to select more than one CINAHL headings to retrieve all relevant articles. Review the Subjects in the results for additional possible subject terms.

Creating a Search Alert

You must have a "My Folder" account to create a "Search Alert". Review the video "Creating a 'My Folder' Account" video before you view this video.
