Citation Managers: Adding References

Adding References using Firefox Plugin

Search database (PubMed, CINAHL Plus (all EBSCOhost), Web of Science or Google Scholar)

  • A yellow folder icon will appear at the end of the url bar after you click on search and results are displayed.
  • Select the references you want to import, click ok.

The lower right-hand side of your screen will show that the item is being saved.

To view the reference, click on the Zotero icon in the lower right. This will display all the references in your library.

You can then sync with the Zotero website to store your references on their server for easy access from any computer.

Adding References

There are numerous ways to add references or attachments depending on whether you are using the Firefox browser plugin or the standalone version of Zotero.

Adding References using the Firefox browser plugin


1.  Search a database (PubMed, CINAHL Plus (all EBSCOhost), Web of Science or Google Scholar

2.  A yellow folder icon will appear at the end of the url bar after you click on search and results are displayed. Click on the folder icon to display a popup window listing all references from that page.  

3.  Select the references you want to import into Zotero, click OK.

The lower right-hand side of your screen will show that the item is being saved. To view the reference, click on the Zotero icon in the lower right corner. This will display all of the references in your Zotero library.

You can then sync with the zotero website to store your references on their server for easy access from any computer.

Adding References to Zotero Standalone using a browser connector (Chrome, Safari or Firefox)

1.  Search a database (PubMed, CINAHL Plus (all EBSCOhost), Web of Science or Google Scholar

2.  A yellow folder icon will appear at the end of the url bar after you click on search and results are displayed. Click on the folder icon to display a popup window listing all references from that page.  

3.  Select the references you want to import into Zotero, click OK.

The references will immediately display in Zotero Standalone. 

Adding References to Zotero Standalone from saved files (.ris, xml) 


Many databases allow you to export references in an RIS format or XML format which can then be imported into Zotero.

You can also drag a PDF onto Zotero Standalone and import the metadata or citation information
