Citation Managers: Adding References

Import References from PubMed

In PubMed using Firefox browser

  1. Conduct a search in PubMed.
  2. Check box next to citation of interest (or leave all blank for transfer of entire set).
  3. Click Send to Citation Manager then "Create File". 
  4. A box will popup, Select Open With EndNote.
  5. EndNote will be launched and the references will automatically be added to the Imported References group.
  6. Move the references to the group of your choice.

Import References from EBSCOhost Databases

The following instructions will work for EBSCOhost databases including PsycINFO, CINAHL Plus, ERIC, SPORTDiscus, Academic Search Premier, and more. 

  1. Select reference(s) by clicking on the Add to folder link or click on Alert/Save/Share link to  place several citations into your folder.
  2. After items have been sent to your folder, access your folder by clicking on the Folder link atop the page.
  3. Within the Folder, check the box next to Select / deselect all or check the box next to each reference and choose Export (right side column).
  4. Select Direct Export in RIS Format then hit the Save button.
  5. A box will popup. Select Open with EndNote.
  6. EndNote will be launched and the references will automatically be added to the Imported References group.
  7. Move the references to the group of your choice.

Import References from Web of Science Databases

In a Web of Science database:

  1. Condcut a search in Web of Science. Select reference(s) (click on the checkbox). You can selected multiple references at one time by  and checking  the Select Page box at the top of bottom of the page.
  2. Send to: EndNote
  3. A box will pop up. Select Open with: EndNote
  4. EndNote will be launced and the references will automatically be added to the Imported References group.
  5. Move the references to a group of your choice.

Import References from Google Scholar

You will need to configure Google Scholar to save references in a format EndNote Web can import.

Follow these steps to configure Google Scholar to send references to EndNote Web:

  1. Go to the Google Scholar home page at http://scholar.google.com/
  2. Click Settings in the  upper right-hand corner.
  3. Under Bibliography Manager select the option Show links to import citations into and choose EndNote in the drop down box.
  4. Click on Save.  

Follow these steps to import search results into EndNote:

  1. After performing a Google Scholar search, click on the Import into EndNote link for the reference you want to import. You can only import a single references at a time.
  2. A box will popup. Select Open with EndNote.
  3. EndNote will be launched and the references will automatically be added to the Imported References group.
  4. Move the references to the group of your choice.

Creating a New Reference

To add a new reference:

  1. From the top menu bar, click on References -->  New Reference 
  2. Choose the appropriate Reference Type using the drop down menu
  3. Fill out the field as required
  4. Close the record. You will be prompted to save.
  5. Your reference will be in the All References group by default.

To edit a reference:

  1. Click on the reference title
  2. Click on the field you wish to edit and make your changes
